About Us

INFIS is a home for filmmakers, dreamers, and community organizers who believe that stories can change the world. Established in Surabaya since the early 2000s, INFIS exists as an alternative space where young people learn, experiment, and voice important issues through visual media. We not only produce films, but also design literacy programs, festivals, creative residencies, and cross-cultural collaborations. We bring together students, educators, artists, and citizens to create a vibrant and impactful independent film ecosystem. From school hallways to the international stage, INFIS is committed to building a generation that dares to speak up, think critically, and create with heart. Every screen is a space for growth. Every scene is a spark of change. Let's light a small light from Surabaya, for the world.

History of INFIS

(2000–2004)

The beginning

The INFIS (Independent Film Surabaya) community was officially established on September 13, 2000, initiated by IGAK Satrya Wibawa, a lecturer in Communication Studies at Airlangga University.

(2008–2019)

Consolidation & Further Development

Since then, INFIS has been increasingly intensive in launching: Community production programs, cinema workshops, film screenings and discussions, open calls & collaborative festivals, film research, collaboration with educational and cultural institutions in Surabaya.

(2005–2007)

Ecosystem Development

In 2005, the first Surabaya Independent Film Festival (Sulasfifest) was held, followed by the Surabaya 13 Film Festival in 2007. This activity strengthened the role of INFIS as a bridge for festivals, discussions, and short film production so that the community continued to grow and become more structured.

(2020–present)

Digital & International Adaptation

During the COVID-19 pandemic, INFIS quickly adapted through: Online forums and workshops, Virtual screenings of short films, Active role as a distributor and exhibitor, Online collaboration with communities, institutions, and international festivals. To date, INFIS remains consistent in strengthening cultural diplomacy and affirming Surabaya as a center for local and global film collaboration.
